"Out of ten, how uncomfortable are you?" Jef sniffled from where he sat at the corner of the couch closest to the worn out arm chair in the family room. He watched with a slanted smile as Guy carried a medium sized, ceramic bowl of steaming soup over a wooden tray with hands sheathed in oven mitts.

"It's a ten," Guy said with voice shaking, taking the last step from the kitchen staircase onto the floor of the family room. He then began to slide his feet against the floor, not daring to lift them for fear of tilting the carrying tray.

Jef rushed down the stone steps of that shabby and narrow row house making sure not to slip through rain puddles that only blemished the concrete further. Once at the bottom he stopped to catch his breath, pacing back and forth over a single slab of sidewalk, noticing his breath fogging in front of him. At one point Jef stopped all movement completely and closed his eyes, allowing himself to breathe deeply in and out just to calm himself enough and rebury the anger that McKenzie, Leah and Cadence had spurred up from within him.
